HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DOING CROSSFIT?
Just over a year. I was press ganged into joining last February by Nick Garnham and haven’t figured out how to leave yet!
Picking up my keys to drive home at the end of a session.
Other than that probably back or front squat. Maybe handstand push up now I can actually do a few!
I’ve given this a lot of thought and consideration. On balance all round Probably Kylie Minogue – she’s got it all!
WOD Wise probably Barbara or Angie or Chelsea – all body weight stuff which I tend to be slightly less rubbish at and longer wods.!
TIP FOR SOMEONE STARTING CROSSFIT...
Join today. Don’t wait to “get fit” before you join. Wherever you are starting from it’s going to be horrible and put you IN pain and OUT of your comfort zone.
Enjoy coming along and having a go. No one will judge you or take the piss. They will wait ‘til you’ve been coming for a while before they start doing that!

AVERAGE DAY FOR YOU FROM BREAKFAST TO BED:
4am Wake up. One or both of our 4 year old twins has climbed into our bed in the night. One is probably asleep on my head while the other has a foot wedged somewhere unmentionable and painful. Put up with it for 2 hours and pretend it’s not uncomfortable before giving up and getting up. Check emails – bloody hell too many emails!
Drink a coffee and maybe eat some Weetabix before heading to 7am Crossfit (if it’s a monday or Wednesday)
7.15 am Stand around wondering when Jon Maggs will turn up for the 7am class. Feel pleased that he looks as knackered as me when he turns up.
8.20. Get back home and fire up my laptop. Brag to my business partner over skype that I have been training – neglect to mention that I was crap!
Work – Work for me is a combination on working on the content of our magazine through interviewing property investors around the UK and working on new sales channels and different products. I spend my day chatting to different people in the property, wealth creation and personal development industries to find opportunities to work together.
At school I used to be told I “chat too much” – now it’s what I do for a living!
Lunch is normally a ham omelette or some tuna on Ryvita. I am a real foodie so one of my challenges is trying to eat healthy when I really want to indulge.
I’ll normally have a few problems to sort out with some properties or be taking a look at a potential property deal as well.
3pm School run. I’m one of a very small number of dads that do the school run. Those who don’t miss out. Your kids won’t be young forever so I try to be around as much as I can.
3pm – 7pm. Post school Armageddon! Help out with teatime and bed time. Tell my wife how lucky I am to be able to be so hands on – secretly wish I was at 18.30 crossfit so I don’t have to chase the kids round the house for 45 minutes!
If it’s a Tuesday I’ll go to 5.30 Crossfit and be back in time to put the kids to bed and read them a story etc.
7pm – 10pm Sit in front of my laptop doing work stuff and watching box sets. Convince myself I don’t really want to snack then cave in and eat half a packet of biscuits.
HOW OFTEN DO YOU TRAIN:
3 times a week –4 if possible. Would love to do 5 but I just struggle to juggle work, property, family, training etc. Life is a series of small compromises trying to get the balance right.
Between work, property family and training it doesn’t leave a lot of time for much else.
1 SONG TO COMPLETE A 'HERO' WOD TO?
To be honest I’d happily listen to The Archers – I don’t really hear the music – I tend to “grey out” a bit. Eye of the tiger has got to be tune of choice I guess.
Maybe we could put some prodigy on every now and then Crossfit DJ?
Ah – here’s the problem. I LOVE food and love to eat out. I struggle to “diet” and can’t help but think I’d be a lot better at Crossfit if I had more discipline on the food side.
Favourite food though? Curry, no cheese? No cured meats, no burgers or maybe roast beef or a pizza aaarghh!! Too difficult can’t decide!
Pretty eclectic – currently listening to Alabama 3 – sort of acid country mix.
BEST THING ABOUT TRAINING AT JM FITNESS AND BEING PART OF CFCV?
Training at Crossfit Chew Valley has genuinely been fun, something I thought I would never have said! I like the variety of training and that you genuinely FEAR the WOD.
Pretty much everyone is nice and we are all in the same boat.
SOMETHING ON YOUR BUCKET LIST THAT YOU HAVE YET TO COMPLETE...
I start learning to sky dive in May – something I’ve been saying I will do for years.
I’d also like to take a year out and travel with my family. I’m working towards the business being able to operate without me so I can make this happen.
3 AIMS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO ACHIEVE IN CROSSFIT? WEIGHTS OR MOVEMENTS
I would REALLY like to be able to handstand walk – it looks cool and my kids would be impressed! Would like to nail double-unders (damn they are so annoying)
As a more overall aim I’d just like get faster, stronger and start to see a more drastic physical improvement from training.
DO YOU TAKE ANY SUPPLEMENTS? IF YES WHAT ARE THEY?
I have a protein shake as and when I remember and partly so I can pretend it’s a chocolate milkshake!
