AVERAGE DAY FOR YOU FROM BREAKFAST TO BED?
I wake up around 6:15am, shower, blow dry my beard and head to work in the car or on the mountain bike. For breakfast I usually eat eggs in some form and some fruit. I snack on almonds mid-morning and then break for lunch around 12:00 for a meal consisting of meat, veg and fruit.

Work-wise I’m usually managing some form of project so I spend most of the day reporting progress or driving actions on one of our Aircraft programmes. Mid-afternoon I’ll snack on peanut butter and seeds before I head home for another meal consisting of meat and veg. I usually get to CrossFit Chew Valley around 16:30 where I’ll do some strength or skills work before the 17:30 class. Post workout I’ll have an all in one protein shake and in evening I’ll have my largest meal with lots of meat, veg and carbs. I normally head to bed around 22:00 as I’m an avid fan of at least 7 to 8 hours sleep a night.

3 to 4 times a week plus cycling and football

The companionship and the energy in the box is second to none. I get to train with some of my best friends and there isn’t much I’d rather be doing four or five times a week.

EXTRA BLURB!
I first trained with Jon back in 2012 when I had a lot less facial hair and a little more head hair. He operated out of a small gritty homemade gym in his parents garden situated on the back drop of the Chew Valley Lake. It was basic but it had everything he needed to deliver a pain staking work out, as he often does. I was unable to do a single pull up when I first met Jon, my strength stats were poor to say the least and my lack of fitness and mobility was detrimentally effecting my performance in football matches.

I distinctively remember being sick from exhaustion during one of his trade mark high intensity personal training sessions and for some unbeknown reason I decided to stick with him from then onwards. I followed him on his first venture to Winford Cattle Market as Jon Maggs Fitness, onto CrossFit Chew Valley and then into the new box we use and love today. I even came up with the ‘CrossFit Chew Valley’ name. I’m still awaiting my prize for this but we all know how ‘Jon Maggs Time’ is slightly different than Greenwich Mean Time.

Today I’m capable of doing things I couldn’t even attempt at 18 or 21 and it’s all thanks to Jon, Ben and the rest of the team. I can pistol squat, snatch, handstand walk, muscle up, the list goes on. However these successes are not just isolated to the gym. As my strength, mobility and agility increased the level I’ve performed at in my football career has increased tenfold year on year.

I leave the UK very soon to travel for the next 18 months and the challenges I’m going to face will be very different but I’m sure the coaches at CrossFit Chew Valley will only be a message away and as forthcoming as always to give advice / coaching at the drop of a hat.
